Washington United for Marriage Salutes Signature Gifts From Mayor Bloomberg and Bill & Melinda Gates In Closing Days

Washington United for Marriage (WUM), the broad coalition working to defend the state’s marriage law and approve Referendum 74, announced that the two significant and signature gifts from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Bill and Melinda Gates will help lead the campaign to victory in two weeks.

Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg, a longtime advocate of same-sex marriage, contributed a $250,000 matching gift, meaning every dollar raised for WUM will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to a quarter-of-a-million dollars. Today, Bill and Melinda Gates made a leadership gift of $500,000. These leaders join over 20,000 individual donors investing in making history in Washington state.

“These amazing gifts, from two visionary leaders, demonstrate their confidence in our campaign which families across Washington state are counting on us to win,” said WUM campaign manager Zach Silk.  “They join tens of thousands of individual donors and their call to action, coming as it does in these final days, is an inspiration to every supporter of the freedom to marry.”
