Extended Family Support and Celebrate Marriage, Wish Same for Gay Family Member in New Washington United for Marriage Ad

Today Washington United for Marriage (WUM), the broad coalition working to defend the state’s bipartisan marriage law and approve Referendum 74, released a new ad validating the multi-generational support statewide for the freedom to marry and approving Referendum 74.

Surrounded by three generations of family, Federal Way parents Merle and Barbara Smith-Mosel talk about their daughter Rachel, her partner Sandy, and how much they want them and the rest of their family to share in their marriage.

“I’d really like to see Rachel and Sandy be able to marry,” says Barbara. “Marriage is too precious not to share.”

Rachel’s father Merle adds, “They’re terrific parents,” as Rachel notes, “Marriage matters to all our family.”

“It’s not about politics, it’s about family,” Merle concludes.

“The Smith-Mosel family is like so many across Washington. They want to celebrate and honor the love and joy their daughter has found with Sandy,” said WUM campaign manager Zach Silk. “Only marriage can guarantee the respect, security, and happiness that all families want.”
