Marriagefactcheck.com, the website designed to correct the record when opponents of Referendum 74 misrepresent the state’s marriage law or attack supporters, today noted that the latest boycott action by the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) follows a wave of unsuccessful efforts to attack marriage equality corporate supporters.
NOM is urging customers of T-Mobile – which donated $25,000 to Washington United for Marriage’s work to approve Referendum 74 and defend the state’s marriage law – to “consider cancelling” their contracts with the company.
Given this news, Marriagefactcheck.com points out that NOM’s past boycotting efforts against pro-equality companies have fallen flat.
In March, NOM launched a boycott of Seattle-based Starbucks – called “Dump Starbucks” – after the company publicly supported the marriage equality legislation in Washington. As of this month, NOM’s Dump Starbucks campaign has collected a paltry 47,991 signatures.
By comparison, a rival petition thanking Starbucks for supporting marriage equality has more than 651,000 signers.
And in June, NOM protested General Mills and launched an online petition after the company refused to support the anti-marriage equality amendment in Minnesota. The “Dump General Mills” campaign has gathered even fewer supporters – 24,442 – than its failed Dump Starbucks campaign. And as noted previously, “A week after NOM launched ‘Dump General Mills,’ the food company boosted its dividend by 8 percent” and its stock held steady.
Said Zach Silk, WUM’s campaign manager, “Given NOM’s failed track record trying to penalize companies that support the freedom to marry, and the fact that a majority of Washington State residents support marriage equality, we’re confident the T-Mobile petition will be just another flop.”
